Panama history
Panama was the main shipping point to and from South and Central America
throughout the colonial era. It was discovered by Columbus in 1502 and by
Balboa in 1513. 40 governments, 50 riots, 5 secession attempts, and 13 U.S.
interventions occurred in Panama between 1850 and 1900. In 1903, Panama
declared its independence with support from the United States after Colombia
rejected a U.S. proposal for canal rights over the small isthmus.
The oldest functioning railroad is located there.
It continues to be fully operational and carries passengers between Panama
City and Colon. Around 10 miles to the northwest of Panama City on the Pacific
side, at Summit, the Panama Railroad was finished in 1855. Included Robert
Tomes.
